Thought I might as well make one of these for Murph as well!
(Taken from "Murphy Update" In General Discussion, and edited.)
When Murphy first arrived on April 29th, he was quite interested in his surroundings and all the new horses! We took him straight to his stall where I took off his halter fuzzies, wraps, and blankie.
A day or two after, while we were out for a ride, Carly, and Heather B were out in the arena and we noticed that he was limping. So I got off and got Kathie. I trotted him on a lead line, and we noitced he was lifting his far hind hip higher than the other one, and his far hind tendon (between his hock and pastern) was swollen. He was also kind of limping on the front, and his near fore was hot, as well as his feet.
We put a poultice on his far hind, and put stable bandages on all fours and took him off any feed that night. Just gave him hay.
His far hind was okay the next day, but his near fore wasn't. I was starting to wonder if there was something under those pads he had under his shoes on his front feet.
We hauled his front shoes a couple weeks ago, and found out that there was no stuffing under those pads (there's supposed to be). His feet are trimmed now, and has shoes put back on.
At first he was like "OMGZZ MY FOOTZIEZ ARE TOUCHING THE GROUNDZ" but he was A LOT more comfortable a little while after.
Kathie took the temperature of his front legs with a surface temperature reader thing, and his far fore was 9 degrees and his near fore was 24 degrees. The heat went down, and he got lots of rest.
I took him out for a walk around the arena a couple weeks ago.
Hopefully the lack of front shoes got some blood flowing. I bought him some new shoes as well.
Kathie did some research on the feed he was getting at Rainbow. She found out that not only can you not get it around here, it contains 15% protein and he was getting 8 cups twice a day. So seeing how we can't get it around here, we're weaning him off it, and putting him on beetpulp, high fat high fibre, oats, barely, and sweetfeed.
The vet was out, but she didn't look at him because he was fine by the time she got out here.
Murphy has also gained weight! and is still gaining, which is great!
When Murphy first got here, he was really attracted to Jazz (a little chestnut mare owned by Lucas Stuckless) and then she went in heat, and starts skicking her arse in other male horse's faces and squeeling. Murph would sometimes attack the male horses (without hurting them) to get them away from her, and one time when they were alone, Murphy attacked Jazz and beet up her face, and a couple other spots. I felt sooo bad.
So he's turned out alone now.
What a wife beater!
I thought it was kinda funny how much he's acting like a human haha.
Murphy is now completely sound, and the vet will be coming out again this week I believe. I'm going to get in touch with her and see if she can do his teeth.
And I finally got guts enough to clean out his sheath.
As for riding, he's a little weak on his left side, and in his hind, so I'm trying to get him to use his hind end a little more, and doing lots of work on the left.
He also puts his head a little behind the verticle, so maybe we'll work on that some other time.
Today, May 29th, I've had him for one month!
Can't wait 'till the show in August!!
