woww i haven't posted here in ages. I took lessons from Erin all summer, and Im working on getting my western coach 1. Red is comming along great. I haven't had a lesson since september now though. His Lope is still..not a lope and it's still a huge issue. If anybody has any suggestions or want to come and see what he does it'd be greatly appreciated. He'll go to the left, although it's pretty fast. But as soon as I ask him to the right, he flattens his ears and takes off, on the wrong lead, then gets frustrated, stops and wont move again. I've tried spurs with and withou a rowel, english spurs, different saddles, different bits, no bit, etc. And it's only to the right.. A few people on this forum have seen him go it's insane. So if anybody wants to come see him in action and give me a few tips dont hesitate, I've had 3 different coaches ride him and he does the same thing, and I've done 3 or 4 Melanie Grey clinics, and he's still like it.
Helpp!!
Oh, and I haven't ridden English in months, and I did my rider 1today, and I got %100 in stable management, %99 on my written test (the one I got wrong was, I wrote bit instead of snaffle bit..booooo!) and a %92 on my riding part, because my horse is nuts and was galloping around, on the wrong lead, and..you get the point!

Wow, when I did my rider 1 with stephan beau was crazy and would stop and was picking up wrong leads(ALL my fault I might add, he wasn't ready!!), so I got on brody and did perfectly and still got 77%..you're lucky! 92% is not bad at all!
Sounds like with the canter, the worse direction do more and more in. That's what I'm having to do with Beau, he races and picks up the wrong lead on one side. Now I have to lunge him and ride him a lot in the right direction(still doing lots in the left too so he doesn't loose muscle and stuff).
Maybe there's something physically wrong..I was told this summer about someones horse who cantered flattened her ears and stopped dead that something was hurting her. We found it, fixed the problem and no more canter troubles! You're a good rider, and if you've tried so many things maybe there could be something deeper to look for. He could have an old injury on one side, or someone told me having bad vision in one eye could cause problems. Also, if it's not an injury, look at yourself with injuries. (i go to a chiropractor) If you always get injured mucles on one side or knots etc, maybe you're unbalances on one side or maybe your spine is out of alignement and you're throwing the horse off. (both of which is my problem from riding injuries when I owned eve..long stories there..I also have a rib popped out of place in my back...well, it's back in there now, but the next bucket I lift, out it will come again..)
These are all the possible things I could think of on my break in school. Something to think about, but I'm sure you'll work it out eventually!

Thanks Aly. Mel Grey looked at him last time she was down and couldn't find anything wrong with him, but who knows. She's pretty experienced with that kind of stuff though, she owns "performassage", and massages pro's! Im thinking ir could partially be me, because my right shoulder is screwed up because I rolled a truck back in March. So that probably doesn't help him. The past 2 weeks I've been riding him though he's been ALOT better, actually picking up his right lead nicley! We'll see what happens in the next few weeks!

Em- have you ever tried riding him bareback? That way you could at least tell whether or not it was a saddle causing the problem?
Definitley an interesting topic- keep us posted on how he goes?

Between me and the girls, we've pretty much figured that him ( and me) have gotten so comfortable on the Right lead, that going to the left is scary. He's much more "wiggly" to the right, and drifts towards the center much more then to the left. We didn't have a decent level arena to work in until this time last year, which is anothe rpart of the problem. Sooo Im hoping consistency with an indoor is going to help more then anything. Im also going to try riding him in Karlah's treeless saddle and see if that helps any. Gill- I rode him bareback once, and he's so narrow I almost slipped right off the side of him, it's hard enough staying on with a saddle

Haha, you need a couch like Tyra! hahaha I've gotten used to riding bareback by now I hope Red doesn't have any back problems, or any health problems in general, really. I've never rolled a truck, but sounds painful, Emily! Keep us updated!
