Any news on the outcome of the ponies that were taken today? I know the 8mth old had to be put down bc she was in to bad of shape. Things like this really pisses me off! Happa was contacted about the condition of these ponies over 3 weeks ago and did nothing!! Time for Happa to have a new President!!!!!

Who took them, the SPCA? And I agree, HAPPA needs an overhaul.

Willadell does not have the HAPPA horses. Was this in the news? This is the first I am hearing of it. It's disheartening to continue to hear about all of these cases of animal cruelty lately even with the new act

No news story yet. I believe CBC is investigating. There aren't any HAPPA horses at Willadel. A group of NL ponies from the Foxtrap area were purchased by a group of concerned citizens, who raised private funds. They were not "seized" or "surrendered" - the owner wanted money for them. The ponies are in poor shape - one has died. A week ago attempts were made to contact HAPPA, and again on Saturday. Unfortunately the sanctuary is not operational - this is but one example of why the sanctuary is needed.

I wonder if this is the same people that bred the colt to the Dam. I was told it was the only way to have a registered horse... Education at the finest.

Tammy when recently questioned on the NL Tack FB page, Dennis said they were indeed operational and "busy". I don'y understand how they are if there is no horses at the sanctuary and requests for help are ignored.
It's unfortunate because HAPPA used to be a great place and it seems that since the board members have changed, the association has deteriorated.
Either HAPPA needs to get their heads out of their asses, or the SPCA needs to make other arrangements for large animals like they did in central when those two horses went to Kathie's for a while.
In 2011 they spent almost 60 thousand dollars. It will be interesting to see what was spent in 2012 and what it was spent on. The province certainly is not benefiting from it.

The fact that people profited from neglecting animals makes me sick (not pointing any fingers- I totally would have bought them as well if I thought they needed rescuing). Hopefully something will be done before they end up with more animals in their possession....

Becca, I called about a QH that was advertised in the buy and sell once. I asked if it was registered and they said "No, it's not a Newfoundland Pony". Uhhhh, Ok.
Nothing wrong with not knowing about breeds and having them registered. We live in a province with a very small "show" community and a small horse educated community. It's NL, and what the father's father's father did was often considered the right way to do it.
It's up to us to try and change that and to do it in a positive way.

I still think there is no excuse about being ignorant on the care for a horse. We live in the technology age where it is only easy to hop on Google and find the answers to your questions. Beyond lessons, I knew nothing about horse ownership when I bought mine, but I made use of other peoples' knowledge through videos, articles, and even asking for help. It's not difficult to tell when your horse is full of ribs or ill. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that they need more nourishment. The difference between someone learning and someone neglecting is that the one who is learning realizes something is wrong and takes means to correct it.
If it were a child being neglected, the person cannot claim ignorance in how to care for a child. That won't get them out of trouble!
