sidenote to earlier mention of available stalls also, there are very few, if any stalls available in Goulds area at least, that would be able to house horses in event of an emergency, there are none at the race track, all stalls are full after taking in the nine horses from the first barn fire. Interestingly enough, just two years ago the government funded massive barn in the Goulds which was built there for the purpose of housing animals( dairy originally) in case of emergencies such as fire etc., was torn down after deteriorating from lack of upkeep and it was used once I believe for the purpose it was built which is too bad given the need for such a barn this past winter

It's not about jumping all over HAPPA, and I don't think anyone is denying the good work they've done in the past. However, they're a not-for-profit organization subsisting on the generosity of donors to keep the sanctuary running. When things are appearing as shady and hush-hush as they have been, when multiple stories are coming to the surface about the status of HAPPA, of its horses, of its facilities, and it doesn't seem that the organization is functioning as it should (i.e. to help horses suffering from abuse and neglect) despite still accepting donations and saying that they're operational, I FIRMLY believe they need to be held accountable for that. As a non-profit, they should have to answer these sorts of questions straight-forwardly and honestly.
I'm sure there are countless people, here on the forum and within the local horse community at large, that have donated supplies, money, or their time in order to help what is a worthy cause. I know I've supported them in the past, up to and including applying to adopt one of the sanctuary's horses. However, this whole situation smacks of dishonesty and mismanagement, and over the past couple of years I've been hesitant to show the same sort of support that I have in the past. I really hope this gets sorted out, and soon. This is something desperately needed in the province and there's such opportunity for it to do such good work in addition to allowing for education opportunities with regard to horse welfare here in NL.

Just as an add on to Jess' post above, during the time when we collected those donations a few years ago (you guys remember, the response from everyone was great, it was around Christmas time, we collected everything from sawdust to money) the management was different.
At that time, they DID want to organize some sort of way to have some sort of educational resource in place. It was so that the person who had that backyard pony that they loved dearly but did not know about farrier care, or deworming schedules, etc. could learn about that while still caring for that pony. A prevention and support program for those that needed it.
Now there's nothing.

When I read on the nea Facebook page that they needed board of directors and committee embers, and people to work at the sanctuary in order for it to operate. I emailed them a few times about being on the fundraising committee and would be able to volunteer working at the sanctuary, and I havnt heard anything back.

If anyone is friends with Tammy on FB, check out the horse they just rescued. One of the horses from HAPPA. Well, at least Hughie didn't suffer the same fate. Lucky him.

^Love to hear the explanation for how that poor little girl fell through the cracks, though the most important thing now is that she's safe. I don't know if Tammy can answer if HAPPA is aware of the status of the mare, or that she's now in safe hands?

Someone dropped the ball on this and should be held accountable. This is not a horse that was sold to someone. This was an animal that was adopted from a rescue organization. NOT good enough. If they are not going to step up to the plate, at least take the money that was raised for their "new barn" and donate it to a rescue that is willing to do what they day they are doing. From HAPPA's website:

Perhaps a media inquiry would be more effective in getting answers to the questions everyone has been asking. The province is in trouble if we don't have a single effective organization handling equine rescue. I'm sure there would be an outcry from non horse people and horse people alike.

Hey Gang! Lots of helpful comments in this post. Jess - you said it well and expressed the way most people are feeling.
Please remember that this is NOT a witch hunt! I am hoping that bringing concerns regarding the operation of HAPPA to the forefront will stimulate communication and provide answers to questions that many of us are asking. I do NOT believe in a rumour mill. I am NOT interested in what has happened before. What I AM interested in is getting a much needed sanctuary up and running again.
It appears as though many people have contacted HAPPA offering to volunteer on committees and assist in any way they can but HAPPA has not taken anyone up on it yet. Remember that this is a registered charitable organization, so should be accountable to donors, members and the general public. If you feel that something is not "right" then do whatever you can to affect positive change. Ask questions of board members, publicize your concerns, dig for answers. But please do not engage in malicous rumour mongering. It's not productive.
There are many horses and ponies that need our help. We only hear about a small minority. We CAN help by getting involved. So lets do it!

Thats what I thought also Rodeo!lol Laundering of money written all over the taxes! I guess they had to hide the money that they spent fraudulently and threw it in for traveling exspenses. For horses that only got their hoofs done 2x a year they never seen any of the donations:( People like that make me sick! I am a firm beliver in Karma, and it will get you!
