Well seems I'd been here for a little while now I thought I'd start a training log on my boy Lugo.
Let's see. It all started about 7 years ago. I bought my horse, Skipper, and moved him to the barn he is at now (the one with Lugo) for financial reasons. He was older when I bought him and starting to go down hill with arthritis. I knew when I bought him he wasn't going to be ridable for long but I loved him dearly and didn't want to see him be sold to someone who would just through him away. So anyway after I moved him and retired him Lugo was about 4 and he caught my eye the moment I walked in the place . Jackie (the lady who owns the barn) said if I wanted to I could train him and use him. So I started some ground work with him. He wasn't a real well mannered horse, really nippy and pushy. And it seemed like the more I did with him the worse he became. But I dearly love him and swor I would never give up on him.
Anyway to make a long story short, it was his feet. We got x rays and every thing was horriable in there. So we went with the barefoot approach. and I took a couple of years not riding him and just working from the ground with him. I rode his mom while we were waiting for things to heal.
So when he was about 7 I started getting him ready to ride. By this time we had an incredable bond formed form all the time spent just hanging out. Then I got pregnant! So he had another year just being a horse. But he was fine with that!!
So now here I am. He is doing apsolutly great (still don't like rocks much but compaired to what he was before we never thought he would come this far). We are just starting out on the basics w/t/c. Actually never done much canter yet cause it's a bit icey and with him not sure of himself yet the ice makes it worst. But we are just taking our time and learning as we go.
I am looking forward to taking him in some flat classes in the show here in grand falls this summer to see how he likes it. I have to start getting him used to being away from the barn first though. So today I tried him on the road. He was great for about 10 mins. Then he got a little nervous so I got him to go a little more then we turned around and headed home. It was good though for our first time in like 2 years. I did a lot of hand walking on the road in the past so I might take him by hand a few times first then ride him again. But our goal for the summer it to learn w/t/c and be comfortable away from the barn.
So thats us! I love him to death and I hope we have a long riding future ahead of us. And who knows we might even make it to St. John's next year!!! That would be great!
