Today I met Enzo and Cativa for the first time. They are both really sweet and beautiful!
The first thing I did was groom Cativa. She was pretty good! She still is unsure about getting her hooves picked so that is going to be something for us to work on... All of AH's horses are taught to stand still in their stalls while they're being groomed. Cativa started to dance a bit so I just put her halter on and tied her like I was told to do. After that she stood pretty still, but sometimes she would back up and try and smell me and see what I was doing! She jumped once when I was currying her tummy but I just soothed her and she settled right down.
Cativa has a really beautiful build and she has an incredibly expressive face. I brushed all the shavings out of her mane and smoothed down her forlock. Not hard to tell she is a little lady!
I have quickly fallen in love with her!
After that I groomed Enzo. Quite frankly he was a pain in the as$. He was really mouthy and up in my face, while I was grooming and while I was mucking his stall. I tied him as well, so he couldnt pick at me or bite me or anything. He is very good to groom and is fine with having his feet picked, which is one less thing for me to have to worry about!
When I was done grooming I did both their stalls. Cativa was a doll and stood next to me or behind me while I worked and followed me whenever I moved. Enzo was annoying...he was up in my face and always nibbling on me. He got in my way all the time and was walking around his stall.
My friend (and the lady who is driving me back and forth) said she thinks Cativa will be harder to back then Enzo...but from my impressions of them today, I think it is going to be the other way around! I think Cativa just needs to trust whoever she is working with, whereas Enzo is going to need a firm and guiding hand, a leader!
I'm going back to the barn tomorrow for a couple hours, I'll update again!

Cative sounds sweet and Enzo reminds me of a horse I ride here. His name is Kareem and he has the WORST manners on the ground, but he is the most amazing horse under saddle. So maybe Enzo will turn out to be a huge talent, and hopefully will learn some respect.
Keep us updated!

okay, today was another FABULOUS day at applehill Got there, everyone was outside! It was not to windy today so everyone went out to play! While they were out, I did both of my stalls and helped around the barn...then I went with Allissa (new girl I met) and brought in Enzo and Cativa. I groomed them both and then Sandra (BO/coach) showed me where all my tack is. She also showed me how to tack up the horses...but first we worked on picking out Cativa's hooves! I held Cativa (halter and lead rope) while Sandra picked her hooves. Cativa did so good! She wiggled a little bit but she lifted her hooves and waited quietly for Sandra to finish! yay Mareee! Then we tacked her up. I dont know how many people on here have started a horse from scratch, but it is very different then just tacking up an already trained horse! Saddle goes on as per normal, but we're using an old dressage saddle that has a broken tree, so that if they flip or something we dont have to worry about damaging the tack. The bridle goes on very specifically- one cheek piece is undone so the bit is hanging, you rub a piece of apple over the bit so it tastes nice, then slip the bridle (crown and browband) on, as per normal, then lift the bit up gently so you dont clank their teeth, and once it is in their mouth you buckle it back up. Then of course do up the throat latch, nose band and flash as per normal. Then we put a halter and lead on over top and away we go! Cativa was really good. We walked around the arena a bunch of times in each direction and then I took her over by the mounting block. I walked up and down it, jumped off of it towards her, jumped back onto it, jumped up and down, stamped around and made a lot of noise and waved my arms around a lot. The worst thing she did was back up and toss her head a little bit! Sandra, who is generally not one to compliment or go out of her way to say something nice, gave me huge props today...she said she was very impressed with the calm relaxed attitude I was giving to the horses, and that they really seemed to feed off that, and not to be too worried about anything. She also was really impressed with Cativa today. Apparently Cativa has never been so calm and quiet when she has been out in hand, with tack on. I did the same thing with Enzo except Sandra didnt help me. He was pretty good...more fussy with his bit but I think that some of that was probably me. He was a little hotter to handle when we were walking around...he is very attached to his "sister" (Cativa) and kept whinnying and trying to drag me out of the arena. We didnt do quite as much with him at the mounting block, just because he wasnt as settled as Cativa was. Then Andre the Cowboy (the only western rider/horse combo at AH) came in to work his horse, and Enzo got a little worked up, so we went for one more walk around the arena (in which he spazzed a bit and then pulled my hat off! haha) and took him back inside. I brushed both of them again...Enzo had two burrs in his forelock so I brushed those out and now he looks like a proper horse again haha Then I spent some time with Cativa, brushing her mane and forelock. Sooooooo thats my AppleHill adventure for today!

No barn for me tomorrow Sandra has declared it too cold for anyone to be working in the barn...she'll do the work and make sure the horsies are safe and sound. So, I *MIGHT* get up to the barn on Sunday with any luck, but I dont know how much work I'll be doing with the horses...probably only grooming. Stupid -33 weather!

Vicky, it is definitley a lot of fun! Working with the kids is a lot different then working with a fully trained horse! I've learned a lot already and I've only worked with them twice!
Going to the barn tomorrow...its going to be cold but it will be good to see the kids again! I cant wait to brush them and give them some lovin- its been over a week!

Today at the barn was great fun! I did a bunch of stalls (they were rotten...the horses have been in for three days so everything stank like pee!) and then rode! I rode Blue, a 4 y/o AQHA...the purpose of me riding him was to get his fizz out. And BOY was he ever fizzy! We did a couple canter transitions and he threw me some bucks (about 3 I think) which I managed to sit. The fourth one? Not so much...I did a somersault and hit the ground running Jumped up and got on again. Had to ride 2 more bucks but he was better then before, so Sandra and I called it a day. On to the kids! Brought both of them inside - they were really enjoying getting to be out in the sunshine but they came in politely and quietly. Another girl, Andy, who also just started helping out, groomed Enzo. YAY- I wouldve just gotten annoyed with him Cativa was a star today as usual. She was very quiet and well behaved coming into the barn and stood quietly while I groomed her. She was a little dancey when I was grooming her legs but thats no biggie as she is still getting used to it. Sandra and I decided that she was such a good girl we wouldnt bother with picking her feet today. Instead I spent the extra time grooming her and brushing all the tangles out of her mane. Speaking of her mane..it is SO incredibly long and beautiful. Her forelock falls right over her eyes! What a little girlie *love* I'm probably going to see about getting her a new halter..a girly one. Maybe pink? or turquoise? haha I have no idea. Although I was also thinking about bringing back my purple halter with the red stars on it. It used to be June's and hasnt been used since she passed away (almost a year- holy cow) Let me know what you guys think on the halter situation!
