OK, here we go. Time to share our "Star" experiences with everyone. Yesterday Kayla was going to have a lesson with Susan at 4:30 so I decided to go to the barn at noon and lunge him a little so that he could get any kicks out of his system. He likes to kick at me if I ask him to trot and he doesn't want to trot. No big deal other than when Kayla is on him. I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of her new saddle with the handle! Anyway, he was absolutely wonderful! I couldn't believe it - the best he's ever been.
We went to the lesson and Kayla rode Tango. We wanted her to get back on Tango because last Friday she was supposed to ride him but she never made it to the ring. She fell leading him out and he ended up stepping on her ankle. Bad bruise, little skin off and lots of tears. But that's another story ...
So I got to ride Star during Kayla's lesson. YIPPPEEEEEEE ! We rode indoors because it was wasn't very nice out. I don't think Star really enjoys the arena because that's where he is more of a little bum! We had a fairly good ride. He wasn't very energetic. Near the end of the ride Kayla told Susan that Star didn't know how to canter so of course I had to prove her wrong! We cantered - it wasn't pretty but we did it twice. I guess I'll have to do more of it because I've entered the gymkhana in the walk/trot/canter division. What was I thinking?
My next little project is to learn to drive. Amy is going to bring in his harness and then the fun will begin. Apparently he doesn't like to stop when he's pulling the cart - gee ... what a surprize!
I LOVE STARRY-BOY ! (that's what Kayla calls him)

I remember a class I was in against him...he raced around like a little racing pony. He may not have came first over Beau but it was cute and I got some cute pics too. Newfies CAN do everything! Beau can also go in harness..pull wood and carts..the works! Jump, long distance trail ride, parades. Newfies. <3 star is very very cute, I like how much energy he has even for an older pony!

Star is actually quite a good arena horse andrea. Being around the bay has nothing to do with it

That pony has been around forever. He used to be my baby for like...four years while I was riding showing jr pony hunters! He was pony hunter champ all the time!! What a pro!! Yep. Tango is still being used for lessons. Kayla rode him again (she's a pretty brave little sole!) and had an excellent lesson.
We didn't get out on the weekend to see him because of dance lessons, etc. On Monday afternoon I skipped work so I could go for a ride - it was sooooo nice outside. I tried a Pelham bit that someone recommended. There was some difference in my ability to stop him but not as much as I expected. I think it was due more to operator error (I need someone to teach me how to properly use one). A more experienced rider has offered to give it a try on him to determine if I'm the problem (I know where I'd place MY money if I was a bettin- man!). We had a good ride though, even with all the circles. He has NO problem going through water. I'm finding it hard to stay balanced on him when he trots - it's a little rough. So if anyone has any suggestions, let me know.
2 people have given me their names as being interested in organizing some trail rides. Pass the word around and we'll see how many people we can get. Obviously it's for all levels. After all, I'm going to participate, aren't I?!
Amy suggested I use a full cheek snaffle. Does anyone have one that I can try before I spend Kayla's christmas money on it?
I'm planning to ride on Wed so stay tuned for more adventures!

A full cheek is a great little bit If you need something even stronger try one with a slow twist. I'd be hesitant about slapping a pelham on him....they can be harsh bits when used by hands that arent ready to handle such a tool! Get some pictures of you and Kayla riding for us- I'd love to see!

I have some pictures. I just have to find the time to post them. Friggin' work gets in the way! (I don't have a computer at home)
I'm with ya on the pelham thing. I'm too paranoid thinking that I may be causing irreversable trauma to the poor boy. I'm definitely going to try a full cheek snaffle - I think it'd be safer.
My plan is still to get someone very experienced (and she knows exactly who I mean) to ride him and see what her opinion is. Plus his owner is going to be boarding at Clovelly soon so I plan on taking advantage of her expertise!

I'll be there on Wed around noon until 1:45. I'm combining my lunch hour with my PT (that's physical training for you non-military types!). Gotta like it, eh?!
