well.... I don't know. He's not exactly full of energy anyway, half halting him would probaly bring him to a dead halt! But if I ride him with Maria's spurs there is a marked improvement, and I could half halt him then, maybe pull him up. I want to get my Champ off the forehand too, because he's too big to approach a jump that way. I'm going to take a video of us some day next week, and then check our progress every month.

Hey Kelly! Woot! got my account working. To Champ, there's no such thing as a half halt! He gets kinda mad when I half halt him(he stops)and then asks him to keep moving... But I still love him. Can't wait to show him with you and Sarah!

Haha actaully I think half halts work well for Champ, it definatly helps get him off the forehand. Just make sure you're using your legs with your half halt and not just your hands!

do transitions to get him off the forehand, Kelly! transitions and half halting will be your best friends for lifting him and getting him to use his hind end Also, doing gymnastics will get him sitting back on his haunches when he is jumping, and also jumping more rhythmically and really thinking about what he is doing!!!

Yes gymnastics are great, and just make sure that you don't forget the leg in your half-halts and it should get you somewhere! You can find lots of exercises for helping horses get off their forehand in books and perhaps online, do you have 101 Dressage Exercises for Horse and Rider? I think that had a good few... either way you should be able to find lots!

So I'm back in lessons again and working with Champ to be "Show worthy" I had a lesson Wednesday on Brandy, which was ideal for me- I need to work on sitting trot and Brandy is VERY Bouncy. It made sitting trot the next day on Champ seem like a piece of cake! Angela gave us an equitation pattern to study in the barn, which had some 15 m circles, walk-canter-walk transitions and a small vertical with a canter-halt transition a few strides later. For homework Angela wants me to ride Champ for ten minutes at least 3 times before next weeks lesson with no stirrups, walk-trot-canter. AND she wants me to do 10 continuous 20 m circles without breaking out of a trot- Champ has a problem with getting tired and quitting on me. So Thursday we went out and I rode stirrup-free for 15 mins and then did 10 circles in each direction. He did it pretty well, and we only broke once- on the left during our second set. The we did some canter transitions which he did eagerly. I wore my spurs though, because he isn't listening to my leg and I try to ask him once instead of asking over and over again.

I know you are all great riders who ride bareback with ease, but I have bad balance, a sore back, and (recently) ulcers, so this, to me, is exciting enough to make me want to post it: I rode bareback on Thursday, trotting, and I didn't even fall off a little bit. Yup. I am so proud of me. I think I may do it again tomorrow! Ha! This is not related to training, I know, but don't you get those little day dreams where you are doing something you know you just can't possibly do? Like jumping a 5 foot course, or breeding hanovarians, or having your (handsome) stable boy bring your horse tacked out for you? Well I day dream about galloping bareback in the field, the wind in my hair, maybe not even wearing shoes(like a blond indian.) Too bad I would fall in a pile of horse poop and ruin the moment. I'm going to ride tomorrow evening, so I will post again then

haha, thanks guys, and Jess I am sure you will get me galloping bareback by the summer. I am dying to do it.
Also on the topic of day dreams- my cousin phones me and asks do I have a horse and she said:
"I've been dying to ride a horse in the winter. It just seems beautiful, galloping through the soft, fluffy snow, being outside always makes my cheeks rosy!. I bet its nicer to ride in the winter, especially in the evening when it is just getting dark."
I said, "first off, what music video were you watching?! Second off, the snow is not fluffy, instead the ground is hard, unless you fall off in which case you will definitely land in mud. Third, riding in the winter sucks- the ground is gross, its cold outside, and your cheeks don't get rosy- they get frost bitten! Lastly, did you ever ride a horse in the dark? Better yet, did one ever spook at nothing and run away?"
I told her to wait until the summer.

Hahaha! Me and Max + Riding in the dark = Mad bolting because apperently, after sunset, everything is scary! But she can dream I guess! I do like riding in the winter and the dark though, providing everything goes perfect haha.
