As some of you may have heard, the Caballista is putting off a National horse show, and for the first time has invited all provinces to compete in what they have named the Canadian Equestrian Championship. This show for young riders/amateurs is being held at Bromont Equestrian Olympic Park just outside of Montreal, Quebec from September 15th-18th. Teams from each province have been invited to compete in three equestrian disciplines-western reining, jumping, and dressage. Representatives from all of Canada's provinces will compete as individuals and teams. This year I was selected by the Newfoundland and Labrador Equestrian Association (NEA) to compete and qualified for the dressage event. Horses and riders were assessed by a nationally recognized coach prior to selection for the event. This year I will be the sole representative for our provincial team.
The team going up this year includes me (Maria Bath) as a rider, and my chef d'equipe/groom (who also just happens to be a photographer!)-Colette Phillips. Our Team Manager and NEA president Kathie Lane unfortunatly did not come along. My mom and I are traveling to Montreal on Monday and will be representing NL at this first ever championship. I would like to thank my sponsor-Copernicus Educational Products, also Sport NL for their help, and of course Kathie for all the time and effort she put into making this happen.
Hopefully next year there will be more interest, a bigger team, and we can get more riders in not only dressage, but the other disciplines as well. This is an amazing opportunity and I am honored that I will be a part of it's début.

It's great that you're going and I hope you have fun and do well! But what happened to the other rider that was supposed to be going?

Congrats! I'm sure you will find it very different than NL lol .. But I have a question, how is it that only you are able to go? I thought there had to be at least two representatives from each discipline?

Congrats, but I have the same question as Heather. No reiners or jumpers going?

No one applied for the reining team. There were some adults that were interested in the jumping but I THOUGHT (but I could easily be wrong) that no team was picked because teams had to consist of a minimum of one adult and one youth.

Did Connor go too or do you ride other horses when you are there? Unfortunately Connor did not qualify, but I wasn't planning on taking him up anyway. I am renting a second level horse here. I still don't know anything about him (or her) but we have been paired based on my size and some description that I sent them. He is being trailered this afternoon and I can not wait to meet my new mount! I plan to try and become bffls with him by the weekend, lol! But I have a question, how is it that only you are able to go? I thought there had to be at least two representatives from each discipline? No-there is no rule for this. For example, the PEI team has kindly taken me under their wing and they only have jumpers on their team. There is individual competition and then team and all the disciplines are separate from each other. I am competing as an individual, as there is no one else-I can not compete as a team for points. Congrats, but I have the same question as Heather. No reiners or jumpers going? You have to show 1.10m in the jumpers which is about 3'6. There were some qualifiers over the summer, but I don't know of anyone who made it (or even just jumped that height, although I know they had that height at the Grand Falls show, I think) There aren't that many people even just schooling that high, plus if they didn't bring their own horses they would have to rent them, and the few people I talked to weren't comfortable with that. As for reiners I don't know that much since it wasn't my discipline so I apologize. Although you can probably guess the kind of level they want, after knowing the other two!!! ETA: I didn't see Shelly's post until after. Yes you are right-if I was competing as a TEAM. I can compete as an individual and ride just as well. Also, when Jess was thinking of going we were both senoirs, which is not alowed for a team of two, however they were still going to let us come and compete. Chances are, we just wouldn't be included in the team competition. Does that make sense? It's all the same riding and showing wise, the difference is just the way they total the points and give out the awards at the end of the day. If a jumper from NL really wanted to go they would be here.

Congrats Maria! I'm glad you got the opportunity to go.
But as for the Jumper portion, I don't think it was realistic for anyone here to go. (besides probably Ashley Guy). There hasn't been any reason for people in NL to be jumping 3'6. It's not involved in the show circuit at all. So no one really has a reason to be schooling that height regularly. And to show it at Bromont, you'd want to be schooling 4', with spreads and water etc. I think if Newfoundland was serious about sending a team, there should have been A LOT more jumping opportunities. The people competing from other provinces have probably showed 3'6 for YEARS now. And personally, in my opinion, it's too dangerous for someone who only started jumping 3'6 say this year to go up and catch ride someone's horse.
Sorry for clogging your thread Maria. I hope you do great and please keep us informed on everything you do and see!!!
