Diesel is 1 1/2 year old 3/4 quarter horse 1/4 newfoundland. He has never been handled, groomed, dewormed or had any TLC. His owner before Sherrylee and me found him had him out in a garden with a stallion and two mares in heat and the poor thing was bullied to the point where he got a bite from the stallion. He ended up spending all summer in the barn by himself with two pigs to keep him company. Even before I got him I visited him often and bought him the stuff that was needed to help cure his small bite mark. He came here two weeks ago and has came a nice way since being here. He is very skiddish and shy since everything is new to him and he has never been handled he dont know what to do with himself. He is a very nice horse that has no dirt in him he just needs time and love to figure him out. I have him dewormed as well as given him a titnus shot. He has put on some weight since being here which is very good and he is starting to overcome some of his fears. Im gradually getting him to allow me to rub/groom him in different areas. I'm just going to take it slow with him and build a good trusting bond between us. When he first came here he was nervous around me but now he lets me walk in and out his stall with no twitching. I can lead him in and out the barn with no problems (even though he doesn't know yet how to give into pressure or commands) but he does seem to listen to me well. I had to cut off his mane sadly because it was just way to matted together and in rough condition to comb out or do anything with, hopefully it grows back pretty quickly, he looks like a pretty punked out donkey right now. He allows me now to brush his neck, back, bum, sides and half down his legs. However he is very touchy on his belly due to the fact that his previous owner for some reason instead of brushing his winters coat he plucked off the hairs on his belly and made him bleed a little. So now he is very nervous that Im going to do the same thing but I think he is now building enough trust in me that he hopefully will get over that feeling soon. I've been around horses my whole life, my grandfather has them as well as my uncle. However starting off from scratch with a horse all by myself is new to me so any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. My goals for the next week will be taking him out on a lead rope to get him use to his surroundings and noises that he has fears with as well as helping with the bond between us. This hopefully will get him use to being leaded around and understand a few commands and pressures. As well as hopefully his new barn and garden will be completed sometime this week so he will be in a bigger area and he is pretty hard to catch sinse he is so shy and nervous so I have to work on him coming to me or letting me walk up to him and just taking him to go back to the barn. Wish me luck with this guy Ill let ya know his progress within the next week or two.

Sounds like you are off to a good start with this lucky boy. Tender loving care and patience goes a long way. He'll be a different horse in no time. B

Well Diesel is coming around. He's not as jumpy as he was when he first got here. I had him out tuesday leading him around. He was crazy first, he would only walk a little way and was being real bossy with me. He is pretty afraid of vehicles and flipped out when one came down the lane but he calmed down pretty good. I let him chill out for a while and then he was getting better. It was real cold out so I only had him out for about an hour.
I was really impressed with him thursday. we are moving his barn from my uncles place into my place so Diesel needed a place to go. Gladly he was able to stay at sherrylees place. The issue was getting him up there, even though its not really that far but we had to walk the road. So sherrylee walked him up with me he hisitated and get nervous whenever the cars went past but when it came to the 5th car he was a bit more calm. Other then that he walked up there perfect. He seems to really enjoy it at Sherrylees place he has become great friends with thaner. He is ding really well with grooming. I can brush him pretty much everywhere now but underneth his belly. Hes a completel different horse since when he first came down. I'm so proud of him hes coming around qiute well.

ok so I've been sick lately and havent gotten the chance to fool around with him but he is coming around pretty good. He's not as jumpy or skidish as he was he is getting use to noise and things going on around him. He had a saddle placed on his back and was fine with it. He can be fully groomed and doesn't mind you touching his belly anymore. The only problem with him is that he has gotten off from his stall like 12 times and we found it strange that he was breaking so much rope and lead ropes and even a snap. But then we discovered that he wasn't breaking them but chewing. yesterday he was placed in the pen across the road from sherrylee's and thanner had gotten out and walked over to sherrylee's leaving Diesel there alone. Since Diesel and Thanner have become so close Diesel wanted to be with his friend and chewed the rope that was keeping the gate closed pushed open the gate and walked back to the barn. Sherrylee had quite the surprise for her when she went in the barn...

had the saddle placed on his back... tried it with a little weight on the saddle just to see his reaction just seeing how he would react to me leaning over him I know he is going to act different towards it in the barn then he will once he gets outdoors but he was excellant in letting us do this so i don't think he is going to cause much trouble.

no he still loves me more.lol...but he has grown to like you, big difference from first when we brought him down he hated you kicking after ya...lol... here is a video took a few nights ago when we just had the saddle laid on his back in the barn to see how he was with the saddle.. so today he had the saddle completely on with bridle and everything. He did so well letting us put the bit in his mouth for the first time. He hasn't mastered the eating with it in yet though..lol.. here's a video that we took today of me just walking around the garden with him. I was trying to get him to trot but lets just say he's a bit lazy...hehe..he would only trot when we were going towards his hay pile...Guts

So we can now pick up his holves and hes great to groom. Still a bit jumpy around a few things but thats normal hes young cant be completely fearless yet. So Saturday we had the saddle on him (the big one not the little one like before...lol...). he was alright with that. I was leaning over the saddle to put weight on it he moved away when dad tried it but let me do it perfectly. We walked him around a nice bit and dad was determined to try him with me on his back. So i got on him he wasn't as bad as i thought he would be. Dad was walking around the garden with me on him he was jumpy but not too bad. Only did it for about 15 min with me on him. but he doesnt mind the saddle at all. My dad has fallen in love with him. he watched him the other day down in the garden with him and dad was walking around the garden getting Diesel to follow him and when he stop Diesel woulf rub his head against him getting dad to rub his face. he was at it for 45 mins. and then he trys to make us think he doesn't like my horse...yea right... I never knows what to post here so dont poke fun if what I writes doesn't make much sense...lol...thats why i only post when i got pics...hehe putting the saddle on him picking up his hoof testing him out heres a quick video
