Just to throw it out there. Something that really pissed me off about last year. People did ALOT of complaining about lack of shows last year. Kathy Lane went and put off a great 2 days show both English and western. Did anyone east of Grand Falls show up?
No. So i think there is no room to complain about lack of shows.
I am not trying to pick on people here. Sure things come up. But make use of the opportunities all across the island. When i lived in central after i turned 6, the closest show was St. Johns(5 hours drive) or Deer Lake(almost 4 hours). And i went to at least 2 shows in Deer Lake a year and 1 in St Johns. And now to see a show actually in central amazes me so much, and then to see only people out that way supporting it, is like a kick to the ass. And well i trailered the whole way just to go.(had to pay my own way. My parents did not help with paying for my shows or travel) Why can't anyone else?

If I could afford the $300 to trailer out and and back (or more) on top of the $200 in show fees, and a hotel room for the night, I probably would of went. But I am not paying upwards of $500 to go to a local show unfortunately. Just not feasable. Maybe if there were nice prizes instead of ribbons. If there were incentives for people to show I am sure they would. I cant justify driving for 4 horus each way to come home with a ribbon, oh, and take time off work. Aint happening.
If you could win a $200 gift card, a gas card, a nice winter blanket, anything that is worth something, it would be worth a shot.
Edited to say not directed at anyone in specific, or Kathy Lane etc. Just a thought.
Edited again because I didnt read previous comments. Jess Rose I agree with your post a million percent.
I can only imagine what gose into running a horse show. And to do it all on a volunteer basis, and have everyone complain, not very gratifying to say the least.
I think the dicipline specific shows are much better. An english judge looks at reining horses differently then a reining judge does, and vice versa. A reining judge looks at a hunter different then they would look at a reiner. If that makes sense..gahh.
Anywho, I agree with Jess, Julie Ann and Donna to sum it up.

Emily, I totally agree. I would LOVE to go to grand-falls to have different competition, meet different people. However, i work 2 jobs and 60 hr weeks to get the things my horse needs and to afford to maintain myself (food, car, clothes). I just can't take the time off work to travel out, back, show fees, hotel rooms, food, gas, and then if anything happens to your horse in travel, you just threw $500 out the window. I do see what your saying Amy, but for most people its just not possible to do it.

I am not going to comment much on this, as I don't show anymore...but I do hope it comes together well this year and everyone has fun!
I just wondered what was wrong with having fun, doing well and possibly getting just a ribbon? When I was showing if I got a ribbon I was so excited....there were never $200 dollar gift cards or winter blankets handed out. I just can't see how just getting ribbons and not fancy prizes, would make me not go? It was all about the experience and just getting out there.

Nothing wrong with having fun and getting a ribbon. But if you are spending $500 or a more, there should be some sort of incentive, IMO. It doesnt make me NOT go, just because I am not getting a prize. NOT what I was trying to say here. Some shows Clovelly held in the past offered coolers and One rider used to sponser shows and offer gift cards.
A friend of mine owns a hunter barn in Colarado and for highpoint they get $250 gift card for a tack shop. I think that is a wonderful idea.

I totally agree it is nice to have a prize for high point. I really thought from your post Emily, that you meant for every class and placing...LOL
How does the sponsoring work? Is there someone from the NEA that approaches companies to possibly sponsor a show or two?

Actually Last year I know ruth story's was only a schooling show! but for highpoint awards she gave out gift certificates to her tack shop! just throwing that out there.
Also when i travelled to st johns a couple years ago as i recall i stopped into grandfalls picked up ginger, went to st johns which is 7 hours away with trailor. and i showed stalled etc. i can't even remember paying over 500 dollars to go?? my gas for 7 hours both ways was only 250. total! plus board for four days was 40. but the upside was i had a place to stay for free! and the show fee was only around 150 for me. so it wasn't even 500 but close and i live on the west coast!
And i'm sure people from the centeral offered their houses to some horse people. i know they can't offer them to everyone ! But it was offered! and since i did have a place to stay in st johns it did knock off a nice bit of my price.
buttt in th end i guess it can be pricey but to me it was worth the experience! I also agree it is lovely to get prizes for high point etc. i agree and disagree in specific areas! but no one can be perfect!

Oh If I had a place to stay and my own trailer that would be another story for sure. But paying someone else, your looking at at least $150 each way.

Jess Rhienlander is holding a Equine Canada bronze level dressage show May 9. The prize list will actauly make it worth while for people to enter...I don't show and I'm tempted! Along with the prizes the Judge that she has coming in is unreal! i'm sorry for the limited details but once EC confirms everything (and by everything I mean mountian loads of paper work!) the Details will be out asap! I was at a meeting for this show Monday and it will be great I was thinking of a thread from last summer about how we cannot competed with the rest of Canada because we don't have EC shows here and now we have a chance to do it! Yes it is bronze but we have to start some where!!

With gas prices the way they are, I can understand it being too expensive to realistically consider traveling across the island to show. When I hauled Willow out for the NEA last year, it cost me nearly $500 in gas alone to drive out and back from Deer Lake (7 hours). Unless there's someone else committed to showing who wants to split the trip with me, I won't be making it to any shows in St. John's this year. I will be attending the show in Grand Falls though. I wouldn't miss that, it's too much fun and won't bankrupt me, haha!

Actually Shelly since the gas prices decided to drop lets hope they stay that way . But also i guess i'm lucky because our truck is great on gas and it seems i'll be heading to st johns to show twice this yearrr soo if i don't take breeze with me your welcome to come with : ). And i agree that it may be only bronze shows but hey we have to start somewhere and once it starts lets home it just keeps getting better!
