So after a week of not riding i finally managed to go for a short ride today It was way to windy to work on much so i kept it to walk and a tiny bit of trot...which would have been good if he hadnt bolted and started almost galloping around the arena:S After that I sortof gave up and cooled him out and went in. Hopefully pur next ride will go better ahah

haha sounds like duff.. he's soo sketchy over his bumm the wind probibbly blew over it and he scared himself he's a good boy though. Why is he like that? it seems that even if someone goes up behind him hell clamp his tail. Its very weird...was he in an accident involoving his tail or something like that?

we dont know exsactly what happend to make it like that.. dana just always told me he's always been like that sence shes had him. when ever i brushed his tail i felt bad for doing it, but that georgus long beast needs to have it done every once and awhile to keep it beautiful.

Yup, me and Boone had a bad accident where his leg got wedged between the fence post and a railway tie, and he was pretty much hanging from it. He was just a baby (five) and really, so was I (fifteen). Very scary, but we were both lucky in the end.

Amazing ride today. It was bareback because i cant stand his cc saddle (its to big fro my butt), and we did aot of trot and a decent amount of canter. Well it want that much becasue i only rode fro about 25 minutes but you know... We did some more of getting him to listen to the cues, esoecially since he wasnt listening to well on th e ground :S. All in all it was a pretty awesome ride

Murphy is my horses half brother They have the same daddy (Normar - Reg. Canadian Sport Horse [TB]) I LOVE Duff. He's absolutely gorgeous, especially in his younger years. The only thing I can think of about his rear being sensitive is he might have gotten a few good smacks on his butt from his previous owner? Who knows. But that's my first thought.

yup thats what i was thinking, either that or he had some sort of tail injury when he was young. Its bad becasue I dont know how I can get him to stop being afraid to have his bum touched If anyone has any advice that would be great

Hmm.. You could try massaging his bum while someone feeds him treats and reassures him. I think it's just fear, so making touching his tail or bum a positive thing for him would probably work after a while.

Make sure you're giving him lots of time to warm up and cool down when you ride, especially if you're going to be doing canter work. He's an old man and when I rode him over the summer he was often stiff afterwards. I used to do lots and lots of free walk as a warm up and cool down, as well as give his legs a liniment bath after riding (although it's too cold for that now). And as for his tail/hindquarters, I've been riding Duff since 2001 and he was sensitive about it then, too. I'm not really sure if feeding him treats while working in his hind area would work where it's been such a long term thing, but it could be worth a try... I've just always been careful around his bum, not making any sudden movements or loud noises; he's usually fine then.
