I figure, since I'm definitaly getting him, I should start a log for him! When I'm 100% about being able to get Joon I'll make one for her too.
Benjamin is an 8 y/o registered Standardbred, I don't know his registered name, unfortunately. He stands at approx. 15.1(haven't sticked him yet). He's slightly underweight but nothing too bad, just a bit ribby.
I'll be putting him on two cups of Hi fat Hi fibre, gradually, and will be giving him Glucosamine(preventative) and Equimin.
Today I gave Benny a nice loooooooooong grooming, got all the knots out of his matted mane and tail, and he was perfectly fine with being sprayed with miracle groom. I cleaned a nasty little cut he has and put some wonderdust on it. The betadine stung him a bit and he tapped his toe a few times, but didn't kick out and calmed down when I talked to him.
I groomed him for a good hour and a half and he was wonderfully patient the whole time.
He doesn't like having people in his space, which I understand. Joe told me he would put up cross ties a for us, so he can still have his own space when not being handled.
When we left to come over to my house I put his pretty new blue halter on him and wrapped Joon's new lead chain over his nose as a precaution. Well, we didn't walk to my house, we danced. "Omg car" "OMG SUV*Jumps into snowbank*" "OMG SNOWBANK". May seem funny, but it got old fast.
We stopped to take a breather in the store's parking lot next door. I ask the lady who was there to shut off her engine for a second. She came over to pat him but he got antsy so I asked her to step back. Once he started breathing like a normal being again and had clamed some we walk the rest of the six feet of road between my house and the store with only one spook! Haha.
Once we got in the yard we took another break, I just rubbed him and talked to him until he was like "Okay, I'm good". Cue switch between chain and lunge line. Soon as I got the mother on him and picked up my whip he moved out and stretched out.
And that, my friends, is hitting the jackpot! Haha.
Two simple clicks and he pick up his trot, as in, not pace .
He was SO full of Beans. He bucked three times, he was trotting around like a maniac. I'm very pleased with his trot, thought.
He was moving, which was what I wanted.
Once I got the little maniac halted again we switched and trotted in the other direction. turned my turn on forehand, which he understood completely. The left side is his best.
Cue "Caaan-TER". Picked it up..immediately. Correct lead. Ohmygodi'minlove.
He just went and went and went, he didn't want to come back, even when I asked.. and shortened my line.
"No I don't WAAAAAAAAAANNA"
He even pooped and cantered at the same time! Go Benny!
He was just feeling soo goood, getting all his "umph" out!
Switched him over, same thing on the other side.
Once I was satisfied and had him cooled out I put Prancer burgundy cooler on him and just hung out with him. He was snooping around, eating snow and nosing his way through it to find grass. He had two huuuge poops(which by the way held no visible signs of worms).
