So this mare is actually for sale however I'm not quite sure if I want to sell her. I am going to start a training log and hopfully get some help from all you english pros in re-training her. Lexie is a beautiful 10 year old 3/4 Arabian 1/4 saddlebred mare. I have been riding her western since I got her and have been totally frustrated with her because she is always acting up... never bucking or anything like that, just hyper (may have to do with her breeding)! So one day I tried her english and she is like a different horse all together. I love my mare but I do need some help. I am going to start training with her tomorrow and I will try to get some pictures to post. However, I need help with basic english riding. I have been riding western for 10 years but I know that it is a little different and I eventually want to eventually start hunter with lexie because I know she used to do it before. Any suggestions?

I am so happy that I get to keep her!!! lol Anyway... today I lunged her for 1/2 hour and rode her for an hour. The biggest thing that we have to work on is head carriage. She used to collect perfectly in english but now since I have been trying to get her to go western it is like she forgot what she used to be like. Now I am working on that and soon I will start trotting ans cantering poles to improve her balance... soon we will be going over the fences....

A word of advice from me, as I've been there and done that..
Dont rush the poles and the jumps. There is so much you can do on the flat without them and there is a LOT of benefit to working on the flat for at least a good few months before introducing that stuff.
I would start with transitions and figures.
Do transitions to get her using herself and listening to your aids, and do figures (circles, serpentines, figure 8's etc etc) to develop the bend, flexion and balance.
Once she has that stuff down pat I would move on to trot poles and lateral work- leg yeilding, turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches.

Thanks for the advice but she is an experienced mare... she is very responsive and according to my certified coach in nova scotia she is ready for the poles... however it is me that needs the work not her she can do pretty much anything... (two-track, flying changes, leg yeild at lope, ect....) But thanks anyway.
