So, I've made time to start one of these things for Oreo, even though I don't keep Reo's updated. Oreo is a 2 y.o up to our barn owned by Claude Locke. Claude doesn't have a lot to do with her, so Rhonda and Sylvia, his mom and sister, were the ones taking care of her, but with their crazy schedules they found it almost impossible to make time for her, so I've started grooming/doing some ground-work type training with her. First, she's got an amazing temperament for such a young horse. I swear, she's got almost endless patience when it comes to being groomed, standing in crossties, etc. She's a complete sook, and loves getting any kind of attention, I really consider myself lucky to get to work with her. I was up yesterday, but because of family coming to visit, I didn't get to spend as much time with her as I'd have liked. She was being pretty pushy yesterday when I was leading her into her stall, so whenever she'd start trying to shove past me, I'd halt and back her. Her halts/backups are improving a lot, I just have to turn towards her, or turn and step towards her, to do either or, without pulling at all on her lead. After a few times, she got the message (she catches on so quickly, whatta girl), and started to walk nice and quietly beside me. She's also got intense issues with chain leads. Not over her nose or anything, but just doubled over and attached like a normal lead, but the noise it makes when the chain runs over the metal loop on her halter really upsets her. Yesterday when I went to clip it onto her, when she heard that noise she started to kick out and get incredibly agitated. Me being me, instead of just using leads without chains, I take this as a challenge. We had made a little progress by the time I put her away yesterday, but it'll take some time. Ah well, I've got lots of it. I'm heading up again tomorrow, so I'll update this one and Reo's when I get home from the barn.

Amanda- She's so much fun. teezernbreeze- I'm almost 100% sure that it's the same horse. I was pretty sure she came from out your way. Anyway, lots has gone on since I last posted. Oreo got her (to my knowledge, anyway) first bath. She was PERFECT. I figured it'd take a couple people, but all I had to do was tie her to the fence post, and she just stood there like the wonderful little girl she is. We were having issues with balancing ourself while holding up our back feet, but we just kept working steadily with it, and she's improved 110%. Also, the chain lead is an almost non-issue now. She still doesn't like it, but she tolerates it, which is the main thing. She gave me quite a fright there the other day. I was grooming her, and she sometimes starts acting her age and backing up for no reason. Anyway, she backed and backed, ignoring me asking her to move forward, until she hit the end of the crossties, found out she couldn't move backwards anymore, and proceeded to FLIP. Literally, all four feet left the ground, and she leaped sideways and smacked into the door. She was just flailing around trying to get off the crossties, but I kept coaxing her forward, finally she managed to take a step, the pressure was off her face, and she relaxed. That's one thing I really like about her: she has a scary moment, gets upset, but then it's over, and it's like it never happened. Though I don't think she'll back up like that again. Today I lunged her for the first time (my first time lunging her, not her first time being lunged). Syl was awesome, and helped me figure out how to push all her cute little buttons. We tacked her up, saddle, bridle, the whole works. She's fine with the saddle, but she's only had the bridle on a few times, so her mouth is going a mile a minute working on it, trying to figure it out. One thing about Oreo, she's one of those horses that try to get out of things they don't want to do by rearing. That's her "trick" as Syl says, to get away from stuff she doesn't like. So we did a little ground-manners stuff before we started lunging, and she was fine until I asked her to back and put pressure on the reins, and up she went. Well, she did it three times, twice with me, once with Syl, and she got in SO much trouble for it. Anyway, lunging she went back to being a doll. It took me a minute to figure her out, but once I did, she worked so well. We did a lot of trot, and walk-trot, trot-walk transitions. By the end of it, she was doing them beautifully, and really listening to me. She didn't even pay attention to the two other horses in the ring with her, even though we were in the little indoor arena. She's coming along so nicely, I'm so proud of the baby girl.

So, Oreo's been doing incredible lately. Her lunging and acceptance of the bit have come a long way. Lunging has improved in terms of her transitions are becoming a lot crisper, her gaits are much more relaxed, and she actually stops when I ask her to now! She's much quieter with the bit in her mouth now, she takes it fairly easily, and doesn't go mad chewing on it the entire time it's in her mouth. She's slowly learning to give to the pressure on the bit, but we've still got quite a ways to go with that. She improves every time I work her, though. She catches on so quickly. I was too lazy to lunge her this weekend, so I took her into the outdoor (her first time working in it) and set up two barrels with a little path between them, plus a couple trotting poles. I'm trying to desensitize her to everything I can think of now, so that she won't have as many issues once she's backed and is being ridden regularly. So I flicked handfuls of sand and rocks at the barrels, and just basically made a bunch of noise with them while she stood between them. She was awesome, the most she did was take a few steps forward. I had her walking and also backing through the barrels, and she was an angel. Then we walked and jogged a few times over the poles. She's pretty good for her age in terms of being conscious of what her feet are doing. She nicked the poles once or twice with her front feet, but she didn't actually trip or stumble when we were going over them. I've also started, when I groom her, leaning myself across her back to get her used to a) weight on her back, and b) seeing a person there. I want to prepare her for everything she's going to have to deal with when she does get ridden for the first time as well as I can, so there are no big surprises. But she's taking everything completely in stride. She's some girl. Anyway, I managed to find a couple pictures of her. One is old, one is from this weekend. I have more from a week or so ago to upload, plus some on my brothers computer from the winter. I should have them up before this week is over. A picture from when we first got her Baby girl this past weekend. LOOK at that gorgeous little face!

Actually she's a breeding stock Paint, if it is the same Oreo that came from Ashley's. I thought she was SO adorable the first time I went to see her! Have pictures of her somewhere, wonder if I can find them. I bet she's going to be like Teezer when she gets older.

teezernbreeze: I'm not sure exactly, when I head up on Friday I'll measure her and see how tall she is, if I can remember. She's around the height of our Newfs, well, two of them anyway, maybe a little shorter. She's after sprouting up a lot, I know that much, but she's still a little bitty baby.
I've started lunging her outside the past few times I've lunged her. It was certainly easy to believe she's a baby, the way she was acting. Ah well, it's just something we need to work on. There's just so much more interesting stuff outside than in the indoor ring, she feels the need to pay attention to it all, and she just about runs herself into the ground she gets so silly. But it's better we start getting used to it now rather than wait until she gets older and even more accusomed to always being worked indoors.
