Some of you may have undoubtedly heard of Brigadier the equine counterpart of Officer Bradfield which had to be put down due to an "accident" which occurred while on duty in Toronto. If you check on the site www.brigadierslaw.ca you will see that some people are trying to do something about this. I'm sure most if not all of us feel quite strongly about the fact there are no laws to protect the service animals used in our law enforcement. Perhaps you could take a moment to put together a quick letter/email that could be forwarded to your representative stating that you would support this law and would ask that they do what needs to be done to make sure a law is introduced to protect these selfless animals. I've included a draft of the letter I had forwarded to my rep after seeing the above referenced website.
Good Day Mr. Doyle, (or representative)
As you may or may not have heard several weeks ago, 24 February 2006 at 18:55 hrs, while on duty the Mounted Unit of the Toronto Police Enforcement Agency lost a member of their unit. The officer, Officer Bradfield, and his horse, Brigadier were mercilessly run over and left in the road to die. Fortunately, the human officer was spared but suffered a number of injuries, his equine partner; however, was not so fortunate and had to be humanely shot on the scene due to the extent of his injuries. You can see the whole story on the web-page which has been set up in his honour. www.brigadierslaw.ca The price this offender will pay, simply dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
The price of the law enforcement party, the life of a "gentle giant" as he was so well known as and the many injuries of his human partner.
My question to you, Mr. Doyle is, will you support our efforts in this regard? As can be seen on the website there is an on-going petition requesting that Government foresee a Bill to introduce "Brigadier's Law" which will see that law enforcement animals be given the same respect and dignity that their human counterparts rightly so enjoy. Should you wish to complete any research on how many of our animal law enforcement partners, fulfill their duty without question and how many have actually lost their lives while doing so (not to mention that in their loss they have saved many of the human officers) I am sure that you will agree with the many number of names that will be seen on the circulated petition which will eventually be seen by our Country's Prime Minister, Mr. Harper that laws have to be changed to include our animal enforcement officer counterparts.
I look forward to your timely response and also await to see if our Federal Government proceeds to "do the right thing", the wishes of its many people.
Respectfully yours, I remain,
PS. sorry this is so long. Normally I don't get involved in this type of thing but in this case I felt obligated.
