I'd probably go in Amatuer. If you go in Open (i'm guessing you're going in western classes), you'll be going against Katrina Butler, Sylvia Locke, Erin Gallant, etc. which are mostly all coaching leveled riders. Amatuer is still very competative, but people are probably more at your level/age groupe in amatuer. Just a suggestion though.

No, you can go in open even if you aren't a coach, but riders that are coaches must show in open. I belive so anyways!

If you are a coach or accept money for services such as teaching, then you have to go in open. Amateur is for people who are not novices, but are not coaches So amateur is probably youre best bet. Just remember that if you go in amateur for this show, you cannot go in novice anymore (meaning, you cant drop down a division). If youre good, you will win your way out of amateur anyway. Hope that made a bit of sense..

If I were you I'd go in amateur for the first show. That way if you really do belong in the amateur classes you can stay in them and if you don't you can always move up to open

Amy the HV show doesn't even go by those classes !?!? hahaha I know how it compares to other shows in the province... its basically a gymkhana... Not the show I was referring to... She showed at GFW last year at a point show and placed fairly well(from what I remember...). If I were her, I would take it up a step(because there aren't THAT many western competitors in a show from what I hear... ) Ashley it IS up to you, just don't go in novice dude! I am confident that you could take Breeze in open notta prob, but thats me! you know him more then me!

I ride in amature and novice for the reining... I have been riding a long long time.... I would suggest trying one show out in amature and then if your winning all the time just move up to open in the next one...

If youre good, you will win your way out of amateur anyway.. does that mean that, say if you get a lot of firsts in the amateur hack division, you'll HAVE to move into open ?? or did i misunderstand that??

You can stay in Amateur as long as you want, years if that is what makes you happy. Just because you win in a division does not all of a sudden make you an open rider, or in any way force you to move up. Someone I know won the Adult Amateur HUS division at the Royal Winter Fair a couple of years ago and beat out something like 60 odd horses. Even after that awesome win, she still competes in the amateur division. She can continue as long as she wants and cannot be forced to move up to Open as long as she continues to abide by EC rules and regulations.
I hold an Amateur Status card that is issued by Equine Canada. Not overly necessary for Primary level shows but when I was showing Trillium in Ontario, it was definitely needed. It gives proof that I do not accept any monetary reimbursement for coaching, training etc.
