Planning to move forward with training Marco to ride (western) so I'm looking for suggestions about the best bit to use when starting a young horse.

A snaffle. Something soft and supple.

I like a loose ring snaffle personally, I use a sweetiron loose ring on josh and on bader i use a sweetiron slow-twist loose ring I would just start with a normal one for a baby

I also like loose rings. I find that it gives them more movement in their mouth to play with and accept the bit rather than a D-ring which is attached. I'd definitely start in a snaffle, though.

I agree with the snaffle as well (sweet iron).
