makes it so much easier for training when the horse can already do it from the ground! taught pj to yeild his hind and front quarters with just a look and when i started riding him it was all natural to him! love reading how the method works with other horses and people!

I rode Maple in the round pen for the next 2 days. By the 4th ride in the round pen I was able to yield her hind quarters and walk, jog, lope her without needing help from the ground. On the fifth ride I took her out in the arena. It looks like Maple wants to be a pleasure horse. We walked, jogged and loped on a loose rein all over the arena and she was super relaxed and calm. There were loaders and dump trucks buzzing around the arena and she didn't even look at them.
Today she is stopping off of my seat, jogging on a lose rein without breaking for ten minutes, she is loping better but is breaking more at a lope then a jog and we started following the fence.
Maple had her first bath today. I was able to tie her on using an Aussie tie ring and spray her off with the hose. She didn't like getting her bum sprayed so I will focus on spraying her with the hose after every training session till she accepts it.

Is the Auusie tie ring one of those rings that allows the lead to loosen if the horse pulls back? I need one of those for Cooter.

Yes Rodeo the Aussie tie ring allows the horse to pull the lead through if they panic.

So Maple has completed her 6 weeks of training. I had to spend more time working on the ground then I had originally expected but she was terrified of plastic bags and it is very important to get them over anything that scares them before you get on. Yes I may have been able to ride her with no problems without desensitizing her to the bags but why risk an explosion under saddle when you can fix it from the ground. Last weekend I had Nacho to Deerlake for a show and trail ride. I had just mounted and we were waiting for the other riders, a plastic bag blew across the driveway and landed by his front feet he looked at it and just stood there. Then a tent blew over again there was no reaction. When we returned from the trail ride someone who had been watching the clinic had left an umbrella blowing around, Nacho actually stepped on it he didn't care at all. So if I hadn't taken the time to desensitize Nacho to the plastic bag and let him know that when he gets scared to stop moving his feet and think instead of running away like nature tells him to we could have been in a wreck pretty easy. Maple is very relaxed at all gates, she is maintaining each gate now without breaking, she is moving off my legs good and is getting soft in the bridle. We are looking forward to the pink show in October hope to see you all out there!

Ahh, ok. I was just curious as to how she was comming along. I can certainly see that being the case though. I don't even show and I barely have time for everything!

Mike was telling me today how you guys had the corners of the arena rounded out. I think I read somewhere before about people doing that to keep the horses from ducking into the corners in avoidance. Sounds great! One of the things I'd love it to have a nice big arena. Eh, one of these days. Looking forward to reading about her progress though. I just like to see how she's doing because she's sired by Rodeo's brother.
