You said you were "hitting her" with the bag. Were you actually hitting her or just flicking it around her? I would expect her to freak out if you were hitting her, but I'm thinking I took that literally, and not how you meant it.

i hit my guys, literally hit them, with bags and throw big bouncy balls at them and they could care less. once your horse is properly desensitized to something you should be able to do anything with that object around them. now mind you my plastic bags are tied to my training stick (carrot stick) so by "hitting them" it's more like flicking them. lol
i've been lucky with all the horses i've had here, none have minded anything. but every horse is different, especially when they are younger!

Gotcha! I read too much into things, so when someone says hitting, I think .... well, hitting! But I know what you mean.

First I have to say I LOVE the name Maple! Very original and ...sweet sounding.
The other thing I wanted to say is I love Clinton's methods. I am using the Parelli program but when you get down to it they are very similar. I was going to start one of these just to show people how well it works but it looks like you have done just that.
Well done with your beautiful horse! I hope to get a Clinton membership as well so I can combine both Parelli and Clinton for the most benefit.

So it took Maple a while to past her fear of the plastic bag. She has gone from reacting and completely loosing her mind to standing still and cocking her hind leg. We still have work to do with the bag, I will keep flapping the bag all around her until she stands with no reaction at all and is half asleep.
Yesterday I rode Maple for the first time she was awesome! very relaxed calm and willing, there was no sign of her thinking about doing anything stupid. Before I got on I round penned her with the saddle, buoys attached and bridle on so she could get use to the reins flopping around her head while she moved. I slapped the stirrups all around on both sides and got on. I only did walk, jog that day and quit.
Today was our second ride. We walked, jogged and loped today. She moved off of pressure much better today and I was able to get her to yield her hind quarters and pick up the jog with out help from the ground. Yesterday I had Cindi help me move her feet so I was the passenger just there for the ride. Today Cindi had to help to push her into a lope she will be helping again tomorrow but I'm hoping I will be able to get Maple to do everything without encouragement from the ground.
She was really good, I wasn't sure what to expect both Rodeo and Cowboy started out quiet but exploded when asked to jog and Misty ( Maple's mom) didn't buck or rear but she would bolt. However Maple is the only one that I have started using Clinton's method....

Yes Nacho was started using Clinton's method. I was referring to Rodeo, Cowboy and Misty.

Sounds like she is doing wonderful and if she turns out anything like Nacho she will be one amazing little girl!! Its great to see the "proof" of a method being used correctly and how well it can work

How does the "help from the ground" work? Is it that you have someone encouraging her with a lunge whip (or whatever CA has)? Or just someone kind of giving an extra cluck or slap on the hip? You know what I mean.
Sounds like she's coming along nicely.

Maple has been taught to yield her hindquarters, yield her forquarters and walk, jog, lope off a look, a point, cluck or spank. Basically at first I was doing her groundwork exercises and Katrina just happened to be on her back. Each time Katrina asked for a turn or a forward move, before Maple had a chance to get her feet "stuck" (which leads to a "buck") I would just give her the cue she already knew. Made for a pretty relaxed start. It didn't take long for her to take her cues from Katrina instead of me. Nice horse!
