Sidonia McIntyre has been a Registered Massage Therapist (human, 1990) for 20 years, and a Certified Equine Massage Therapist (2001) for 10 years. She also holds a certificate with distinction from the University of Guelph in Equine Health Sciences (2006). She has taught this program across Canada at varying therapeutic riding associations: PRDA in Langley, BC, LTRA in Lethbridge, AB, The Whitemud Equestrian Centre in Edmonton, AB, GRACE in Owen Sound, ON, WETRA in Windsor, ON, TEAD in Hamilton, ON and The Joyriders TRA in Charlottetown, PEI, along with other private facilities.
The Equine Massage Therapy Course is a seven day intensive equine massage therapy program, which consists of both book work (theory) and hands-on work with the horses. Both aspects of the course are equally important, as it is vital to understand the theory of massage therapy, and understand soft tissue damage, along with the hands on time with the horses in order to learn how to work on the various areas.
Below is a fairly accurate schedule. There are breaks and lunches according to the feeding schedule of the barn so as to not upset the day to day routine of the barn. The first 6 days are 2:1 ratio students to horses. The only time that students are working one on one is the last day for the final massage.
Day 1 7:50-12 ish - registration, book work and lunch
12:30 ish-5 hands on work in barn
Day 2 8-12 ish - book work and lunch
1 ish-5 - hands on work in the barn
Day 3 8-10ish book work
10:30-5 hands on work in the barn and lunch break
Day 4 8-10ish book work
10:30-5 hands on work in the barn
Day 5 8-10ish book work

Day 7: 8-9ish book work – final test

At the completion of this course, graduates receive a certificate, may charge for their services, and call themselves a "Certified Equine Massage Therapist."
