No judge is going to hear a case because you want to sue someone over "rumours" or "gossip".

And trust me, for the police to get involved, you have to outright say you're going to cause harm to someone physically.

I've had a TON of trouble with people over the years threatening me online and in person but not actually saying in it in a way that the police would do paperwork over.

Lots of "watch your back or else's" and "you're going to get it's". Unfortunately these types of things won't grant you help from the police.

The only thing I can recommend is gathering all the hard evidence possible of *harassment* not necessarily threats and apply for a peace bond-and be vigilant-it takes a lot even to get a peace bond. (My neighbour took an axe to my deck, threatened to kill my animals and with less direct words threatened myself and my mother and the judge thought it was a "one time thing" and we didn't get it).

And remember, always take into consideration your own actions. I've been harassed and threatened but also been accused of doing it solely for refusing to put up with the crap that other people give. Most of the time it's best just to walk away, online or offline, and be the better person before you end up yourself being incriminated!

Actually yeah, sometimes they will, it's called slander. I mean no, it's not as simple as "He said I was this or that" but if you have someone professing untruths about you, you actually can have them charged if what they are saying has the potential to cause you emotional or financial distress. Like if someone lies and says you committed a crime that could land you jail time, that would be considered slander.

Very true, I should have been more specific. No judge is going to hear a case about kids gossiping about each other. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's gotten "My uncles a lawyer and we're going to sue you for slander" for saying in passing to a mutual friend that I dunno....you thought their horse was underweight or something.

btw-was just doing a little research and in order to HAVE a case for slander you need to be able to prove financial loss.

Slander is the type of defamation with no permanent record. Normally it's a spoken statement. It can also be a hand gesture or something similar. The law treats slander differently than libel: with slander, you have to prove you suffered damages, in the form of financial loss, to get compensation. I dunno about the slander thing, but I know one thing, I have lost a huge amount of enjoyment in keeping horses since I have been labeled "The Horse Starver". And what can I do, try and sue people over it? I know who started the gossip, but what can I do about it now? Nothing.

My only regret is not keeping track of incidents that have happened because of this, like my electric fence getting cut, lug nuts on my trailer getting loosened, harrassing phone calls late at night, etc. Perhaps its been payback for arguments I've had with people, I don't know. But if I knew then what I know now when I built my own barn.... well, lets just say I'd still have a nice pretty lawn instead of a big red building and a riding arena.

Its nice that many of us have opened up to saying we've all been there before, accused, misread, misheard, missunderstood, gossiped about, threatened, given a bad rep...Everything in the book. in life, on the internet, in school. whatever, wherever.
its good to know that Other people Know what you're going through, being yourself the person being gossiped about or whatever. your not alone.

I think everyone that has gone through that, once, twice or many times, Learned that we need to grow from this.
yes we can't always control that we can be childish, or we dont always think before we write or speak. and sometimes TYPING something can So Easily come across the wrong way to other people!
i could jokingly say something like "wow for an Old horse, he looks ok"
and someone can take that as scartastic, or me calling the owner bad at caring for him. Anything.

Mods help us when we cant help ourselves. being horseowners, we are Passionate, sometimes we think: horse horse horse horse horse, before we read into something to get all the details. before we think.

"Lock" ,"this needs to be locked", "this should have been locked ages ago"....
this is just more unthought useless comments, when you can either ignore, or help to stop the problem. or if all else fails, contact a mod and say you think this thread needs to be looked at, and these 2,3,4,5 or 6 people should be messaged and told to smarten up.


No matter your age, if your 10 and you've got an account on here, or you're a horseperson of 50 years, we all should Try to act mature.
Im childish sometimes, im mature sometimes. so are You. So are our Mods!
But we're all good people.
why are we here?
because we all Love horses. we all want to know more about horses, most of us actually know many of us on the forum! we;ve been around the bush and back, we've met each other, gone across the provience, met each others horses, Helped each other!

I've noticed recently there have been fewer "fights" or disagrements on the forum, and it makes this place so much more pleasent.
i used make this my number one address to type in, as soon as i opened the internet.
then i stopped, it became so childish and just fighting everywhere for days on end.
and its starting to clean up here now.


If you have a a problem with someone, why can't we deal with it in private, or with help (a mod) in private, why must we make fools of ourselves and others on this? if the mods and creators want, they can close this website. then you can make your own, and it'd all start over again.

respect each other. if theres someone on here who rots your soul, socks, and sweater, then just dont deal with them, unless you can be civil, polite or ignore your hatred of them. Just Chill
