Hi girls,
I have recently been attacked with false slander about my horse keeping methods. If you have heard any of this I would like to know, I want to see how far it has gone. Please PM me.

I've been filled in Tessa.. Red, Angel and Splash have been outside almost every single night since May, and their first night in was last night. They weren't blanketed until a few days ago. They're all very healthy.
Your not the only one who thinks keeping horses outside is healthy, dont worry about it. I wouldn't let people who know alot less then you bother you!! The ponies look awesome AJ and me drove past there the other day.

Thanks girls. We have figured out the source of all this trouble, and, sadly I have to cut myself off from somebody who I thought was a friend. It's all about money, sad eh?
The ponies are doing so well, that's why these comments were so strange and hurtful to me and my family. I'm glad they haven't gone too far.
You are all welcome to come down and visit any time you like (The ponies love snack-presents!) and I hope to get out and see you guys soon! Thanks for your support.

I leave my horse out all year round not blanketed(he has shelter, and he gets his blanket if there rain to freezing rain to rain again..that kind of stuff) I'd like to see what these people thought of that. : P Well everyone knows how bad it was outside today and I couldn't get Beau to go INSIDE out of the rain and wind.....until i gave him a flake of hay. : P
I'll try to come by soon!

Fury and Fanjee live outdoors 24/7, 365. They have access to shelter (be it an actual little shed, or thick trees).
The year before last Fury lived outdoors almost completely all on his own, with a single building and some trees that he couldn;t go in, but he could shlter himself on any side of it (no matter which way the wind blew, he could shield himself from it). If it got really stormy and or wet, I had a blanket I would put on him up in the pasture iwth the other horses where they had access to a huge open sided barn. That horse NEVER went over by the sheltered end of field, he would just stand around in the wind. I never ONCE saw my horse so much as quiver, and he just plodded around placidly with his 2.5" winter coat.
Someone called the SPCA on me.
An investigator had to come out and check the horse and the place out, and a vet was consulted. The investigator told me that she didn't even wanna be there, but they were obligated to come check me out because someone filed a formal complaint. The vet told me to put a tarp up or something, just to make people happy, but that the way I was keeping him was fine.
I don't know the story, but I know it sucks ass when people question whether your taking good care of your horses. I wasn't very impressed.

I don't know alot of people in the local horse community. I am, however, one of the site's "older members" and have lived a fairly varied life. If anyone slanders you, starts rumours, etc, do not react to it. Only "little-minded" people start rumours. My basic philosophy is that if someone says something against another person, it usually stems from either jealousy or the person just being plain miserable in their own life. You know in your heart what type of person you are. True friends will support you through thick or thin. Obviously this was an incident where you discovered who your true friends were (or weren't). Always try to be the better person and don't let the miserable people drag you down!

I agree with Star for sure!
I'm positive if Newfoundland had a better climate ( and not so much crazy weather which changes every half hour) alot more people would have their horses turned out over night!
Logic just makes it seem healther! I wont stay in a room if I cant at least open a window!
Some horses, dont have windows! (not that theyre unhealthy!)
And some horses would kick the walls down to be outside!
Happy Trails!

The way I look at it is that in Alberta, the ranch horses that aren't in use are all turned out onto the Prairies, with minimal shelter, and hay is thrown out from the truck driving through the fields, or dropped from helicoptors if its a really big establishment. The temps drop to -40 degrees celcius there, and the horses fend for themselves. They are healthy as can be, and happy too. They seek shelter in the trees and brush when needed.
Now, mind you, some horses are MISERABLE when outdoors. I realise that. There are some thin-skinned Tb's and others that no matter if they were pastured 24/7, probably would never grow a coat thick enough to keep themselves warm. But if the horse is happy, I only feel BETTER keeping them outdoors 24/7.
I honestly think that it just makes people feel better to have them inside, because they think think that they themselves would be cold outdoors, and we like sleeping inside, so of course the animals must too. The point is that they are animals, they survived for thousands of years outside quite happily with no special care, and most of them continue to do the same now. Especially Nfld Ponies.. I mean, for the last couple hundred years, these ponies basically fended for themselves outdoors when they weren't hauling wood around for their owners. Its rediculous to say that keeping them outside is cruel... my gelding sweats if hes kept in a warm barn during the winter!
The shelters are generally unused out here, unless we put their food in them. Otherwise, they rarely use them.
