Kelly- that is a GREAT IDEA! each "division" could have their own competitions and then come together for a championship!!

I'm interested in participating in this type of event. I figure it's something that I can compete in (mostly against myself) and still keep my dignity. My concern is how to train for such an event so that neither myself or Star end up in physio afterwards. Neither one of us is young anymore so we'd need more prep time than you youngsters ...
Has anyone read any good books on conditioning for trail rides?

well I volunteer to be heavily involved in planning- I'll try to get sponsers for prizes too if there is enough interest(and if Dixie H wouldn't mind! It was their idea!)

Tammy- I think a good way to work on this is just to do it!! Get out on the trails (god knows clovelly has lots of room to get out of the arena!) and do some riding. You'll want to gradually up the time you're doing serious work. I dont remember how long the girls said that this past summers ride was, but I should think you'd like to be in a condition where you can ride for 2-3hours and still be fairly comfortable!
Do lots of hill work to build up his muscles! That will help too!

When I was getting Brandon ready for the trail I did alot of x-country work. I took him on trail rides at least half the distance of the finished trail, got his conditioning up so he could canter a half mile without having to stop and catch his breath, did ALOT of uphill trotting and throught rivers, trail terrain, gravel roads, etc etc. All in all I got off from the ride without being sore at all (just tired) and Brandon was just as good as when he entered the race.

ya brandon was amazing on the ride....when i was getting thunder ready i did alot of the things you done except the rivers.. i was afaird that he would hurt himself on glass or sharp rocks but thunder was a pig for most of the ride so it didn't matter but i love him anyways ....

canter .... did you say canter ? ..... oh d-d-d-d-dear! Guess it's time to force myself out of my comfort zone of trotting. I don't think I was such a chicken 17 years ago when I used to ride. Ageing sucks!
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to nail someone at Clovelly to come for a trail ride with me so that I can get familiar with the trails. Any volunteers?

I did pretty much the same thing as Sarah but not so much canter work. I rode trails every day, mostly walk and trot, up steep hills, canters across fields, races with my friend and her pony in other fields, rides to the beach, exploration rides where we probably could have gotten lost(which is pretty bad of us)..etc! I also did some jumping just for exercise. I'd probably jump a 2'6 vert 3 or 4 times every couple rides. Beau did great. We had a lot of trouble keeping up with other people though, Beau has a lot shorter legs than the other horses : ) and he doesn't like being left behind..so trying to keep him from running to catch up, and trying to win a ctr at the same time was difficult!
We came in 5th, next year I'll make sure to show the judge when I give Beau water, stay on the same side of the road as the other horses, inform them his stomach is wet because he's short and going through water gets him a lot wetter than the tall horses(they thought he was sweaty..but really he was soaking wet with water that I couldn't dry off him!). I'll also make sure I go to the barn like... 4 in the morning and give him a huge feed of hay..and bring hay for the halfway point...beau was a little...crazy at times because he really wanted to get home and have a feed...I think we would have made out a little better if he had some hay halfway through!!
anyways...this sounds like great fun. We'll definatly be going in next year!!

Thank you! Couldn't Prancer go in a CTR?
I went on a long hack this weekend into St.John's from Beau new barn with a friend. I rode to my boyfriends house and he had a ride on the other horse.
I still have to work on trying to teach Beau he can't always be way ahead of the other horses on the trail. :S

I took Star on a quick trail ride yesterday. At first he didn't want to go away from the barn but once we got going he was fine. We did some walk/trot. Who knew that trotting in a straight line outside the ring was so hard?! We did a fair bit of wiggling. When we got to the wooden bridge (not very high off the ground) he didn't really want to go over it. Took a few steps, stopped, took a few more, tried to turn around, stood still, fertilized the bridge and then hopped over the side. Tried again - same routine. Then the lightbulb went on ... take advantage of him wanting to be a barn rat! We walked beside the bridge (in the direction going away from the barn), got to the end of it, turned around and then asked him to go across again. No problemos! (I felt so smart!) On the way back we even cantered a short distance in the field. Slowing down was a bit of an issue but he did walk eventually. Overall it was a good first attempt. I'd say we were only gone about 20-30 minutes or so but ya gotta start somewhere!
