Elastics are quicker and easier, but yarn keeps braids together better and look much neater and more profesional. I also personally find yarn easier to work with. More difficult to take out though. For NEA shows I braid with yarn, but for small schooling shows and such I am usually lazy and use elastics, if I braid. I'd braid for you, but I take a while I'll do tails though! Don't say you can't braid, just practise them!

Great Site!
We call the 'continental' a fish net braid. Shilo uses it alot and we used to do it on Faro too! June's long mane works well for them too! haha
